R.S.H.E. – Page in Progress

At Star Primary, our RSHE curriculum ensures that all children are equipped to address the challenges of having a happy and successful adult life. All children need knowledge and skills that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy and this is provided through our curriculum. The intention of the curriculum is on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults. We want children to make safe choices online and a lead a healthy life.

The majority of our RSHE content is taught thought the Happy Schools scheme of work. The programme is taught every week, from Reception to year 6, which over time enhances the personal, social, emotional and economic wellbeing and happiness of our school community, and supports children’s mental health. There are five areas of focus: self confidence, achievement and success, positive relationships, support and coping skills. Children complete a wider range of activities and have time to reflect on their new learning.’ Children are rewarded with ‘Happy leaves’ in assembly when they show achievements in the 5 areas above. Every class has a happy tree to display their leaves. Children record their work in ‘Citizens of the world’ exercise books.
RSHE links to other areas of the curriculum, including science, P.E and computing. Children learn about positive relationships and safety online in computing, how to be and feel healthy in P.E as well as knowledge of the human body as it grows from birth to old age through science.

Pupils are confident and happy. Children are able to negotiate challenges effectively and positively. Children can recognise the characteristics of a secure and healthy family life. Pupils understand that other families may look different but are characterized by love and care. Children recognise if relationships are making them unhappy or unsafe that they can seek help. Children care and are respectful of others and know how to keep themselves safe online. Star pupils are resilient and have strategies to that help them have good mental health. Pupils are prepared for the Secondary school RSHE curriculum.
