Last week, we celebrated our first Identity Week at Star Primary.
The week was a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore some of the factors which help to shape their identity. This is particularly interesting for our school context as there are a vast array of identities and cultures from all over the world which make Newham and Canning Town such an interesting place to live and work.
Identity was explored through poetry in English lessons as well a family project – where children were tasked with creating a family tree.
The week culminated in an Identity Day where the children were encouraged to come to school dressed in clothing which best encapsulated their identity.
The highlight of the day were the live performances we enjoyed from the mariachi band Los Soneros who performed for each year group as well as the parents at the end of the school day. It was so wonderful to see so many children and parents singing and dancing along!
With Spanish being the modern foreign language we teach at Star Primary, this was a fantastic and enjoyable way of exploring Spanish speaking culture and identity. Children in the EYFS and KS1 also enjoyed a Spanish taster lesson and those children in KS2 continued their Spanish learning but with the special theme of identity.
It was an amazing week and we very much look forward to making this an annual event!
